World Triathlon is presenting Podium's virtual race capsules to all athletes at the Ibiza and Pontevedra Age Group World Championships.

Continuing its commitment to ‘growing a more sustainable and innovative sport’, World Triathlon's blockchain partnership with Podium sees age-group athletes presented with their own personalised, virtual race capsules at its two biggest mass participation events of the year.

The local organising committees of May's World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza and September's World Triathlon Championship Finals Pontevedra have partnered with Podium. The agreements sees traditional finisher medals replaced with the virtual capsules, to provide athletes with a permanent and unique digital record of their race.

Included within the registration for the events, all participants can download their capsule free of charge, each one providing a certified record that includes finishing position, distances, splits and total time, event location and course conditions.

The first World Triathlon age-group event to feature the race capsules was the 2022 World Triathlon Championship Finals Abu Dhabi. Here, despite not being included automatically in race registrations, a reported 1,702 athletes engaged with post-race comms to view their race capsule.

"The engagement levels that we have already seen with the capsules after our mass participation events show the enormous appetite for digital collectibles among the triathlon community," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado.

"We see this as the future of race memorabilia; and World Triathlon is incredibly excited about the future possibilities for the sport using this kind of technology."

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships Ibiza saw in excess of 3,000 age-group athletes racing, with that number set to be exceeded in Pontevedra. According to World Triathlon, a large take-up of the race capsules represents a significant saving in the carbon footprint that the creation of traditional finisher medals would have left.
