2 juveniles taken to Brenner's after eating THC gummies

The Ashe Sheriff’s Office released this photo with a story about two Ashe County

The Ashe Sheriff's Office released this photo with a story about two Ashe County juveniles who were transported to a hospital in Winston-Salem after eating apparently normal "gummy" candy that contained delta-8 THC.

Ashe County Sheriff B. Phil Howell said two Ashe juveniles were recently transported to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem due to their reaction to eating apparently normal "gummy" candy that contained a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant.

Howell said both children were released from the hospital and are back in Ashe County.

He said the pieces of candy they consumed contained Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC) but were in a bag that made them appear to be normal gummy candy.

Howell said it is still illegal to use and/or purchase some cannabis-derived products. Marijuana and hemp have different concentrations of CBD/THC. Marijuana contains a higher amount of THC, the central psychoactive part of cannabis that produces the euphoric feeling of getting "high."

Howell said that according to the Children's Hospital Colorado, the most common overdose incidents in children occur when food is combined with an edible form of marijuana can have a stronger and prolonged effect when ingested in this manner. This is especially true for children under age 12.
